My name is Skúli Helgason and I am a member of the Reykjavik City Council. I would like to ask for your support to keep my position in the 3rd seat on the ballot of Samfylkingin (the Social Democratic Party) in the upcoming city elections this spring.

Equality and Education

has been the driving force in all my work in politics; ever since I started fighting for equal rights to study in student politics with Röskva in the University of Iceland 30 years ago, later as chairman of the Parliament's Education Committee and now for the last 8 years as chairman of the Education and Leisure Committee

The primary election for Samfylkingin will take place on February 12 and 13. You can vote on your phone or computer. By clicking the link below you can get all the information you need on how to vote.

You can take part and have an influence on how our city will be governed!

We Social Democrats

believe that all children should enjoy a quality education and the support needed in their school. I am running for the 3rd seat on the ballot because I think it is important that Samfylkingin continues to lead the city's Education and Leisure Committee,  which I have done for 8 years now.

In the last years we have made significant progress in increasing equality in the educational system. Among those are the following:

  • A new education policy for Reykjavík with an emphasis on five fundamental skills: social skills, self-empowerment, health, creativity and literacy for all children with the aim of supporting all children to let their dreams come true

  • An Icelandic learning center in each city quarter to further support children with Icelandic as a second language

  • A new financing model for the city's elementary schools which takes into account demographic variables in each school district

  • Better wages and working conditions for teachers and students with new financing of over 5 billion ISK in the last few years

  • A close collaboration with the Department of Welfare in Reykjavik on better support for children and adolescents in their own districts

  • We have also obtained a lower admission age for kindergarten so now all children that have reached the age of 18 months can get into preschools and we will make big steps this year in admitting even younger children
